Let’s be honest—navigating skincare can feel overwhelming. Between social media tips, flashy marketing, and ever-changing trends, it’s no wonder so many people feel confused about what their skin actually needs.

At Unique Skin & Body, I believe in cutting through the noise and guiding you with real, honest education. So let’s bust some of the most common skincare myths I hear all the time in clinic—because when you know better, your skin thrives.

Myth 1: The More Expensive, the Better

It’s easy to assume that a product with a bigger price tag will deliver better results—but that’s not always the case. What matters more than the price is the formulation, ingredient integrity, and how it suits your skin.

Yes, I stock professional and medical-grade ranges here in the clinic—but I also carry beautiful, budget-friendly options that still get results. Skincare doesn’t need to be unattainable. It just needs to be effective and right for you.

Myth 2: Oily Skin Doesn’t Need Moisturiser

This one’s a classic—and it’s simply not true. Every skin type needs hydration, including oily skin. In fact, when your skin lacks moisture, it often tries to compensate by producing even more oil.

The key is choosing the right kind of moisturiser—something lightweight, non-comedogenic, and formulated to support barrier health without clogging your pores.

Myth 3: You Only Need Sunscreen on Sunny Days

Cloudy? Rainy? Sitting inside? You still need sunscreen. Up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate cloud cover—and yes, they can reach you through windows too.

Sunscreen is your skin’s best defence against premature ageing and damage. A broad-spectrum SPF 30 (minimum!) should be part of your daily routine—not just your beach bag.

Myth 4: Exfoliating Daily Is a Must

I get it—there’s something so satisfying about that smooth, fresh-skin feeling. But more isn’t always better when it comes to exfoliation.

Too much can lead to redness, sensitivity, and impaired barrier function. For most skin types, 1–3 times per week is plenty, and opting for a gentle enzyme or acid-based exfoliant will give you results without the rough scrubbing.

Myth 5: Natural Ingredients Are Always Safer or Better

Natural isn’t always synonymous with safe or effective. Poison ivy is natural too—but I wouldn’t recommend it on your skin!

In clinic, I work with a blend of corneotherapeutic, medical-grade, plant-based, and cosmedical ingredients—because it's not about natural vs synthetic. It’s about choosing ingredients that are clinically proven to work, and well-suited to your skin condition and goals.

Myth 6: Makeup Causes Acne

Makeup itself isn’t the enemy—it’s often the way we use (or remove) it that causes issues. Using non-comedogenic formulas, keeping your brushes clean, and thoroughly cleansing your skin at the end of the day can help prevent breakouts.

I always recommend a gentle but effective double cleanse at night, especially if you wear makeup, SPF, or are exposed to pollution.

Myth 7: Skincare Is Only Important as You Age

Starting early doesn’t mean going all out—it means setting up the right foundations. A simple, consistent skincare routine in your teens or twenties (think: cleansing, moisturising, and SPF) can set you up for healthy, resilient skin later on.

Prevention is always better than correction. And no, it’s never “too late” to start either!

Final Thoughts

Your skin doesn’t need hype—it needs understanding, consistency, and support.

At Unique Skin & Body, I’m here to help you make sense of what your skin actually needs—without the overwhelm. Whether you’re just starting out or ready to level up your routine, I’ll guide you with real advice, proven tools, and a treatment plan that’s genuinely tailored to you.

Because skincare shouldn’t be confusing, and it should never be one-size-fits-all.
